To start off, you will need to undertake Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) or Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) training. This type of program aims to prepare drivers to become skilled and trustworthy as well as pass the driving test from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency or DVLA.

HGV or LGV licences are classified into four: Category C, C+E, C1 or C1+E licences. With the Category C licence, you may drive vehicles weighing more than 3,500 kg with or without a trailer which should weigh only 750 kg at most. You will need the Category C licence first if you want to apply for the Category C+E for trailers over 750 kg in weight. As for the Category C1 licence, this will permit you to drive vehicles with a weight between 3,500 kg and 7,500 kg and a trailer may be towed if the weight does not exceed 750 kg. Similar to the Category C licence, the Category C1 is a requirement in applying for the Category C1+E. The Category C1+E licence is for trailers with a minimum weight of 750 kg and the trailer and the vehicle together should not weigh more than 12,000 kg.
